AMAZING BENEFITS AND SOME SIDE EFFECTS OF BITTER GOURD (BITTER MELON)…..

Bitter gourd juice may not be the most tastiest vegetable, however it is a perfect juice for a Diabetic; besides most medicines are hardly tasty! It is best taken on an empty stomach in the mornings! Bitter gourd from the melon, squash and cucumber family has amazing benefits when consumed in moderation!

AMAZING BENEFITS OF BITTER GOURD!

  • Treats blood disorders such as blood boils and toxaemia, to solve this problem (mix 2 ounces of bitter gourd with lime juice and consume on an empty stomach for 4-6 months for improvement in health).
  • Treats respiratory disorders.
  • It contains a rich source of a certain plant insulin (a hypoglycemic compound), this plays a key role in lowering sugar levels in blood and urine. This juice helps in improving blood glucose tolerance.
  • Also, bitter gourd treats gout; it is great in cleansing the liver as it flushes out the toxins of the blood circulation. It reduces gout pain, thus providing relief.
  • Treats asthma and bronchitis.

Recipe:

  • 2 ounces of freshly prepared gourd juice
  • Mix with honey in a diluted cup of water

WATCH OUT FOR HARMFUL EFFECTS OF BIITTER GOURD!

Although extremely healthy, more than 2 ounces of bitter gourd juice or consuming more than 2 gourds a day is not advisable; it can cause:

  • Abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
  • It is a ‘big no no for pregnancy’, as too much tends to stimulate uterus and may lead to preterm labour.
  • May cause adverse effects upon the body when consumed with other glucose lowering agents.
  • If suffering from glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), can cause a condition called Favism; if one consumes the seeds of biter gourds.. This condition can cause anaemia, headaches, fever, stomach pain

Kale and Mango Smoothie

Bursting with calcium, beta carotene, C and B group vitamins.  The sweetness of the mango balances the kale. Refreshing and delicious!

juice of half a lime/1 tbsp sesame seeds/ a handful of curly green kale/1 mango peeled and chopped/ 225 ml almond or soya milk/small handful of crushed ice

Put the sesame seeds into a blender- process into a fine powder, add mango, kale and lime juice. Add milk and crushed ice, blend until smooth.

ANTIOXIDANT SMOOTHIE

  • 1 cucumber (seeded with a spoon, and chopped into chunks)
  •  A handful of blackberries
  • A handful of chopped fresh mint
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • Add mint, cucumber, berries and yogurt into a blender, process until smooth and enjoy!

Cucumbers are a fabulous source of vitamin C and a phytonutrients called caffeic acid which prevents water retention. A great source of Folate- a B vitamin that is essential in maintaining a healthy heart. Berries are loaded with antioxidants, vital in order to keep your immune system strong!
